Rugby League World Cup helps 7Mate to strong Friday showing as news dominates main channels

Rugby League World Cup viewers helped deliver strong East Coast viewership to secondary channel 7Mate on Friday night.

7Mate took a 9.3% share of Sydney viewing and 10.7% in Brisbane.

The tournament averaged 253,000 viewers across Australia’s five capital cities, including 113,000 in Sydney and 82,000 in Brisbane.

The move viewed program of the night was Seven News, with 814,000 metro viewers, while Nine News rated 751,000, according to OzTAM’s overnight metro ratings.

ABC News rated 623,000 metro viewers.

The non-news show with the highest metro viewers was Seven’s Better Homes and Gardens, which scored 599,000 viewers.

Next up was A Current Affair with 569,000 metro viewers, followed by DCI Banks and Endeavour following shortly behind with 537,000 and 532,000 respectively.

Nine’s airing of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban failed to crack the top ten, with a total of 373,000 metro viewers.

Seven was most watched channel of the night with 17.8% of viewers, followed by Nine with 15.9%. Ten rated 12.8%, behind The ABC’s 13.8%.
