Seven ratings break Melbourne Cup record

Seven won the ratings race with its broadcast of the Melbourne Cup, which saw nearly 2.6m viewers glued to their screens to watch Shocking take the cup – the biggest audience in the race’s history.  

The metro audience of nearly 2.6m surpassed the previous best under the OzTam system from 2005 when Makybe Diva enjoyed a third Cup win with 2.5m watching.

Seven also took eight of the top 10 spots for the night, with Packed to the Rafters, Seven News, RSPC Animal Rescue, Today Tonight, Last Chance Surgery, Home and Away and the Melbourne Cup afternoon coverage also rating well, according to preliminary OzTam figures.

Ten made it in the top ten with NCIS attracting almost 1.3m, while Nine’s highest rating programme for the night was 20 to 1 with 1.2m.

Seven took a 34.4% share for the evening, followed by Nine with 22.2%. Among the digital channels, Nine’s Go remained ahead with 2.6%, followed by the recently launched 7Two with 1.7% and then Ten’s One channel with 0.8%.
