Seven’s Betoota blunder
“Fake news” may have been the buzzword of 2018, but in 2019 it seems viewers of Seven’s cricket coverage still need to watch out for fact versus fiction.
Seven was caught out last night by a Betoota Advocate claim, broadcasting the “fact” from a satirical article last year which said the disgraced player “recently returned to band ‘Tame Impala’ as the Kazoo player”.
Bancroft has recently been allowed back to top-level competitive cricket after a nine-month ban following his role in the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa, but Dr Mumbo didn’t know he was so talented: batting, wicket-keeping, cheating AND kazoo playing!
The gaffe was quickly caught on social media – where Dr Mumbo gets all his giggles – with the satirical The Betoota Advocate lamenting “this is totally unacceptable”.
Seems the commentators on @7Sport were just Betoota’d. Cameron Bancroft played for Tame Impala… Right #BBL08

The ‘Cameron Bancroft Kazoo player for Tame Impala’ graphic might just be the funniest screw up in Australian media history. I don’t know how it could be topped.

Dr Mumbo really hopes social media isn’t working against him in a big Betoota hoax. For now though, he looks forward to when they strike again.
There is a long and gloroious tradition of this.
We used to publish The Bladder, a satirical sport site, and years ago News Ltd picked up our story about cricketer Colin ‘Funky’ Miller receiving a retirement-celebration concert in Hobart by George Clinton , the Godfather of Funk.

I remember The Bladder fondly. Had a lot of great stories on Anthony Mundine. It was in many ways well ahead of its time. Kudos.
