Seven’s comedy duo falls again
Seven’s winning run came to an end on Thursday night with TV Burp and Double Take both rating disappointingly.
Sketch show Double Take, at 8.30pm, rated 832,000 (down from 942,000 last week) while TV Burp rated 774,000 (down from 846,000). From next week Seven is to reverse the order the two shows are aired in, giving TV Burp a stronger lead-in from The Amazing Race which did 1.1m last night.
Meanwhile, ratings for Ten’s The 7PM Project still appear to be in decline as it fine tunes its format. It rated 695,000 compared to 767,000 on the Thursday before. But Rush drew its highest ever audience.
Thursday night’s share: Nine 29%; Seven 25.6; Ten 22.9%; ABC 16.5%; SBS 5.9%.
Thursday’s top TV shows:
- Seven News Seven 1.5m
- Today Tonight Seven 1.4m
- Getaway Nine 1.2m
- Rush Ten 1.2m
- Home and Away Seven 1.2m
- Nine News Nine 1.1m
- Two and a Half Men Nine 1.1m
- 20 to 1 Nine 1.1m
- The Amazing Race Seven 1.1m
- A Current Affair Nine 1m
Ed Cavalie is a Burp. I use to listen to Akmal and Cal “The Wrong Way Home” on Nova religiously and then for some reason they added this turd to the mix and the show slowly went south, eventually dying a premature death. The problem is, everything Ed touches turns to KaKa. He thinks he’s funny when really, he’s just funny looking.

To tell the truth, its not a bad idea for a show…. He’s just not a funny man.
Kind of sad, really..

When I watch TV Burp, I feel a bit like I do with the 7PM Project. I like the idea, I like the genre, I like the format. I really want it to be good, and sit there willing it to be.
And at the end I feel like there was a little something missing.
With both shows, there might something in there that could grow – but it’s going to need some very committed programming decisions.
Cheers,

I think TV Burp is a great concept, I just think they have the wrong person hosting it. I agree with Tom, he’s just not a funny man.

832,000 people watching Double Take – incredible. I wonder if any of them are aged 14.

over 14 I meant….

I have to risk taking the opposite view here, but I find he has quite a good tv personality for this sort of thing – not a comedian, but likeable. Maybe the show’s too long. Ten minutes would probably be enough – but no-one does that anymore on commercial.

TV Burp has the potential, but it needs a bigger personality to host it.
The orginal UK version is hosted by Harry Hill, a famously quirky UK comedian. Harry was responsible for the entire style of the show and the patter of the jokes. It seems strange to see Ed Cavalie just ripping Harry off, instead of doing something more in keeping with the Australian sense of humour.
The success of Masterchef shows that Australian TV can steal with pride, but it only works if the hosts are true to who they are and not pal imitations. Australian Top Gear anyone?

Find this really had to believe.
Only just stumbled upon those two shows last week and think they are the funniest on Australian television at the moment.

Well Megan, I guess thats why their ratings are shot. They haven’t got enough people accidentally stumbling on to their show.

TV Burp has legs, but not with that innane host. I cringe ever time he assaults my screen. I am sure there is a young funny man out there somewhere who could take the show to the heights it promises.

It’s a shame that TV Burp isn’t really capturing the audience because I think it’s a great show. The 7PM Project is also one that I hope catches on more with the viewers, particularly as it has noticeably improved since its first week.
But as for Double Take? Not a fan

I only sit through Double Take to get to TV Burp. (and then continue to True Beauty, but that’s another sad story).
The gags on Double Take – so unfunny, and just run for far too long (did we really need a full satirical rendition of Beyonce’s song? Please.)
I’d agree with most people here – TV Burp has a great potential, and I enjoy it, (I have less strong feelings towards Ed than some, though!) But gee, imagine if Shaun Micallef hosted it? I think he’d do a great job at something like that. (Just don’t let a Daddo get hold of it….)
Besides, TV drama needs to be poked fun at – most of the time, it’s comedy gold in itself, without someone pointing it out.
