Shannon Molloy launches journalism scholarship in honour of late friend, Clare Atkinson

Amazon’s content editor Shannon Molloy has launched a journalism scholarship in memory of his friend and former journalist Clare Atkinson, which will provide work experience opportunities in Sydney media companies.

The Clare Atkinson Memorial Scholarship will look to support journalism students facing financial and other hardships, to provide them with experience in broadcast, print and radio news.

Atkinson passed away mid last year

Based out of The University of Queensland – Atkinson’s former university – the scholarship was created to honour Atkinson’s legacy, after she passed away from terminal secondary liver cancer.

Atkinson was a journalist who had worked across television, radio and online in both Australia and Germany, across titles including ABC, SBS, The Guardian and Huffington Post.

According to the UQ website, the goal of the fund is to allow any future students to have a career as successful as Atkinson’s.

“Clare’s loss had a profound impact on many people and I wanted to honour her memory with something that spoke to her passion for giving back to the next generation of journalists,” Molloy said.

“Her life-long love of storytelling will live on through this scholarship. I’m proud to help make that a reality. Any support from the industry to bring the scholarship to life would be hugely appreciated.”
