Shaun Micallaf cast in Australian sci-fi

Shaun Micallaf has landed a role in the Australian sci-fi film Arrowhead as the voice of a computer.

The announcement:

Australian performer and writer Shaun Micallaf has been announced as the first cast member in the sci-fi film Arrowhead, signing on to play the voice of REEF – a futuristic computer.

Arrowhead is the first-ever local scifi production commissioned by TV1 General Entertainment Partnership and was scheduled to premiere in 2014 on SF, however due to the closure of the channel, TV1 is now exploring other premiere and global distribution opportunities.

Directed by Jesse O’Brien, Arrowhead is being shot in some of Australia’s most breath-taking and remote outback locations, with second stage filming scheduled for February in Coober Pedy, South Australia.

Star and host of hit television shows The Micallef P(r)ogram(me), Talkin’ Bout Your Generation, Shaun Micallef’s Mad as Hell and Mr & Mrs Murder, Micallef said of the film:

“’I liked the script very much and was in love with the idea of playing a sentient computer in a Sci-Fi film, but the prospect of turning up everyday and cramming myself inside a computer worried me a little. Then Jesse explained I could just go to a studio and record my lines and they’d play them back later, so I agreed.”

Initially a crowdfunded project, SF stepped in to financially support Arrowhead, a tale of survival on a distant planet. Main character Kye, a prisoner of war caught between two armies, becomes stranded on a rescue mission after his spaceship, the Arrowhead, crash lands.

Micallef’s character REEF, an artificially intelligent computer installed on the Arrowhead’s crashed shuttle, becomes Kye’s companion. While at first Reef appears to be simply an information kiosk, he soon develops a warm, friendly and curious nature that will prove vital to the hero’s survival.

Arrowhead Director Jesse O’Brien said of Micallef’s involvement:

“We’re very excited to have Shaun Micallef on board – he has that perfect balance of likability and intelligence. Reef is a character who’s been close to my heart ever since the first inkling of the Arrowhead idea, and to have Shaun bring him to life is going to be perfect.”

The feature-length screenplay for Arrowhead was written in 2010 and follows the success of Arrowhead: Signal, a short film which garnered attention and critical appraise for the filmmakers.
