SICKDOGWOLFMAN’s SLATHER launches debut spot, with Haven’t You Done Well
SLATHER – the sunscreen brand from creative agency SICKDOGWOLFMAN – has released its debut spot which was made via a collaboration with Aunty Donna’s production company, Haven’t You Done Well.
Playing off SLATHER’s position that “The sun is not your friend”, the 90-second film follows a man named Gary who’s tucked away in the darkness of his home. But upon meeting the sun, Gary is tempted out into the sunlight before receiving severe burns across his face.
It was developed by Will & Sej – a directing duo who joined Haven’t You Done Well in early November 2024; Rodney Lowe from Production Alley for sound, and more.
The work is part of SLATHER’s mission to raise awareness of sun safety among Australian men – a demographic where only 1 in 5 people actively wear sunscreen on a regular basis. The sunscreen company has created “two in-house animations” to further connect with the aforementioned group.
“SPF sunscreen marketing has traditionally grasped at very low hanging fruit. Bikinis by the beach. Families by the pool. Summer holidays. But that’s not really the truth is it?” SICKDOGWOLFMAN’s creative director, Jess Wheeler, said.
“The sun doesn’t just magically appear when you’re on vacation. The sun is there when you’re working outside building a shed. It’s there when you’re having a three-hour surf. It’s there when the coach has stuck you at deep fine leg for an entire innings.
“It’s there when you’re doing spin kicks in the mosh pit at a day long festival. In Australia, especially, the sun is ever present.
“And SLATHER is here to speak to this truth, whilst also saying what no one else in the category is prepared to. That as much as we love the sun, it doesn’t necessarily love us back in the same way.”
Intentionally designed to circumvent traditional, ineffective sun safety messaging, SLATHER was announced in December 2024 by Wheeler on LinkedIn.
