Sleeping to the top of the radio ratings, one listener at a time
Getting to the top of the radio ratings is possible – if you’re willing to do whatever it takes. The secret is reaching members of the public who fill out the listening diaries. And sleeping with them.
So Dr Mumbo was intrigued to listen to the latest podcast from comedian and broadcaster Wil Anderson.
In his podcast, Anderson (somewhat nervously) shared with former colleague Sam Mac the secret of how he defrauded the ratings.
The revelation came after Mac opined: “I’ve never met someone who’s filed in a ratings book.”
Anderson corrected him: “You have met someone who’s filled in a ratings book… I have.”
He revealed that the incident occurred when he had just started presenting a show on the ABC’s youth station Triple J.
He said: “I was in Adelaide. I would have been about 25. I had just started at Triple J. I was a younger, single man… and I met somebody and I stayed at their house and it turns out that that person had a radio ratings book.
“So the next morning when I was laying there in bed, I filled in their radio ratings book… and in the next radio survey in Adelaide, our numbers went right up. They listened to me from six to nine, every day. They were big fans. Massive spike. If only I could have slept my way round the country.”
On Wednesday night, Anderson will be hoping for a big audience for the return of Gruen to ABC1.
Dr Mumbo suggests that OzTam households who hear a knock on the door after 9pm should take the appropriate precautions.
Just asking for a friend, who really fancies Wil – where can they get themselves one of those leg-over radio book form thingies?
