Slow start for ABC1’s Crownies
The debut of young legal drama Crownies, which aired at 8.30pm last night, pulled in a fairly disappointing 706,000 for ABC1.
The top five most watched shows are exactly the same as last Thursday, with Masterchef winning the night, with 1.609m, and The Block the second most popular non-news show, with 1.167m, according to preliminary overnight metro ratings from OzTam.
Though Today’s resurgence against Sunrise looks like a distant memory, the contest was closer yesterday, with just 27,000 separating the breakfast news – Today’s duck-related disaster no doubt helping to boost ratings.

1. Masterchef Ten 1.609

I only caught a glimpse of it, but there’s all these barristers and QCs who appear to be 19! It’s the legal version of Home And Away – where everyone’s attractive and no one’s old. Hey, I’m all for that, but it’s very un-ABC!

Never seen such a beautiful and young bunch of legal experts, maybe I have been hanging out in the wrong courts!!!
Not bad, but some of the extras were appalling actors

Crownies was terrible – some of the worst writing I’ve seen on TV in a long time!

Yep I tried … but lasted about 5 minutes. Relatively dud acting from the start – the guy who threw the apple in the air – like he’s just not THAT guy. Director person – let it go if the actor can’t pull it off. Guy with the hair talking to the blonde chick – noone has hair like that, except for wigs in bad recreatinos on paytv local productions.
And do insipid 20 somethings even appeal to insipid 20 somethings? Ya lost me.
Also – the teaser campaign was OK – and dragged on as teaser campaigns do – but to actually then tune in at the correct time to watch the programme and have to endure 2 minutes of what’s coming up – which I’d endured for weeks prior – that really blew the impact of the event of something new.
Sorry, I tried.

I loved it, but watched on the IView player. Please +1 me to the ratings if you could. Cheers

It had everything – sex drugs & the slick, pacey scripting that today’s youth so admire. But for the wrong audience. It would have rated much better on Ten. So move it to a young/commercial station and give me back some boring adult demographic stuff that the ABC does so well.

After all the hype in it’s promos, I was looking forward to some good quality, meaty court-room drama in “Crownies”. Alas, I am still waiting. Sure, it’s early-days just yet, so I live in hope of much improvement in scripting, acting and direction in the episodes to follow. The actor who played ‘Ben’….hmmm, not sure if the casting was quite right. Sure, he’s cute, but I just wanted to give him a good-old-fashioned backhander. I belong to the demographic that a previous writer (Matt) described as ‘boring-adult’. Well, lets see, eh? As we’re not all 20-something air-heads (unlike many of the cast), I’m sure ABC1 will prove to be the perfect home…in the fullness of time!

At first it seemed Ok, but after a night’s sleep I have to wonder. Storylines far too shallow and characters even more so. I came away only remembering one name and felt only one actor had actually done their job – the christian office worker. She managed to flesh out a well rounded character with the material she’d been given.
I couldn’t get past the ham acting of all those who were supposed to be abgry but failed. Anger is an emotion that should be felt in the gut, not just voiced in the throat. I felt I was back watching 2yr acting students in their midyear play.
Who came up with the idea to have a sex scandal involving the attorney general as part of the ‘getting to know us’ first episode? The aduience had not had enough time to warm to the characters, let alone to actually care what happens to them. This has left the series with very little room to move in the future. Not to mention, the whole burqa storyline was very poorly researched. (hint guys, it’s not a burqa).
Not sure you sent the right message about the show by opening with half dressed females running around – or maybe you did? Get some experienced acting coaches in there for superfast paced training, tighten scripts and put some more depth and caring into what you want us to see and you might just have a half decent show.
Too much, too soon.

I was really disappointed too considering the hype (and Mark Scott’s spruiking). It wasn’t good at all. It was cringeworthy and cliched throughout. A truly terrible script. The acting/production/premise is ok.
I felt it got somewhere in the last 10 minutes, but that is me being biased and looking for something positive that I wouldn’t have if it had been a foreign production.
Why did they opt for such a long and introductory episode?
I’ll give it another go in it’s normal hour-long format next week, but only one more chance.

Crownies
I enjoyed the show with the Xmas party theme throughout made it something different along with some fresh new faces.
Like all new shows teething problems with some of the new actors overdoing it ,like Ben .
Looking forward to the next episode .
Nice one Aunty!

Crownies
I taped this on showing night and watched it on Saturday afternoon. I was probably blessed to have been able to pause and do some thing in my workshop, instead of trying to watch all the show in one sitting. It was easy to follow (in my opinion) and I never had to rewind to remember what went on. However I believe a number of the actors were less than good, not only the young ones but senior staff were dead in the water for me. I am different to a number of the other comments in that I liked most of the younger actors because they were so bad they seemed to be natural. It would be great if this show could kick on with the precocious youth and leave the older players to catch up, if possible. I am looking forward to a few more episodes. (1 hour only please)
