SMH Diary buys the lamest tip of the year
Remember last week’s dodgy “tip off” about how utterly brilliant Prue MacSween and Tracey Spicer are on 2UE?
In case you don’t remember, it was an anonymous email from “Radio insider” who claimed:
“Is Australia ready for an all girl talkback team?
“It’s rumored that 2UE’s trail of commercial radio’s first ever female duo, Tracey Spicer and Prue MacSween may already be shaping up to be more!
“After just three days on air together, Spicer’s left-wing journalistic approach and MacSween’s right wing views are creating more than a little noise on the airwaves and attracting a good deal of listener feedback from men and women alike.
“Even some of 2UE’s skeptical old school are apparently tuning in and conceding to the potential of the all girl talkback team! The question remains, will these holiday guests become permanent fixtures?”
Clearly no self respecting journo would buy such obvious spin, would they?
From today’s Sydney Morning Herald diary:
“Individually they’re formidable, but together Prue MacSween and Tracey Spicer have become almost unstoppable. The discovery by their bosses at 2UE of the first commercial radio all-girl team has turned out to be the surprise success of 2011. The pair, who have been broadcasting in the noon to 3pm slot since just last Monday, quickly found themselves the centre of increasing industry buzz with rumours they’re becoming so popular the temporary gig would have to be made permanent.”
And there’s more. 2UE manager Tim McDermott tells the SMH: ”One’s a bit of a leftie, one’s a bit of a rightie.”
That’s some darn fine investigative journalism you’ve done there, chaps.
The best of luck to them, but I’d be waiting for some ratings data before declaring them such a huge success.

Hmm, remind me who owns 2UE again?

Hang on … I saw this big ad today in which the SMS proclaims it says no to favours, no to compromises, no to agendas and is wonderfully independent.
I suppose I should not take the ad so seriously. It’s just raw messaging after all. The wisdom embodied in the editorial process is where the real value lies.

Isn’t there already an ‘all girl radio duo’ doing the 3pm slot on one of the FM slots anyway?? The girl from Big Brother and the girl from MTV.

Good pick up Mumbrella – I read it and laughed. After one week they are suddenly ratings superstars? Unless the stations is asking thier listeners directly, how would they know? I listened to them but wasn’t that impressed. Stuart Bocking wouldnt be too worried about losing that slot. Fairfax really is lowering its standards.
