SMH ups its cover price by 10c as Fairfax attempts to raise $700m
Fairfax is to increase the cover price of the Sydney Morning Herald, Mumbrella can reveal. However, it will still be 10c cheaper than The Australian.
From Monday the weekday price of the SMH will move up from $1.30 to $1.40. The Saturday edition will also go up by 10c to $2.40.
Earlier this month The Oz shifted its weekday cover price from $1.30 to $1.50.
Fairfax is currently in a trading halt as it attempts to raise nearly $700m from its shareholders.
I am not worried about this at all. My local shop hasn’t updated their price from when it was $2.20 despite me pointing it out to them on lots of occasions. Even if they do finally update it then I recon it will take a while for me to break even …
BTW – set by Carlos, the sports crossword is definitely one of the best things about the weekend.

I’ve had my calculator out…
10c x 6 days = $0.60
Multiply that by 50 weeks (to keep the numbers round and allow for non publication days etc) = $30 extra per edition.
Multiply that by 235,000 (rough average of weekday and weekend sales)
= $7m.
So if they can do this once a year, they can raise the $700m they need in, um, 100 years…
we’re now paying $1.50 for The Age so SMH still has some catching up to do 😛
