Snowtown promotion takes controversy route
Justin Kurzel’s upcoming feature Snowtown has been featured in Seven’s Sunrise as “Cinema controversy: The film accused of glamorising crime”.
Producer Anna McLeish and Queensland University of Technology senior research associate Dr Mark Ryan explained that Snowtown is not a horror film and instead, it is an exploration of the social/psychological circumstances that the 1990s South Australian murders originated from.
The project attracted media attention when it was first announced last year, but reports were mostly positive after the film’s premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival. However, it seems inevitable that the mainstream media will continue to use the controversy angle when discussing Snowtown. Whether this will have a positive or negative impact on the film’s performance remains to be seen.
Snowtown will be released on May 19.
