SodaStream launches $2m Christmas ad push with pastiche of YouTube PlayStation clip
SodaStream is launching a $2m advertising offensive in the run-up to Christmas.
The ads, shot in the style of a home video, are a pastiche of a YouTube clip of a man who explodes with excitement on receiving a PlayStation 3 for Christmas.
They were made in the UK but adapted locally with an Australian voiceover.
The YouTube clip from 2009 has been viewed around 130,000 times.
The ad campaign will kick off with an ad that ran last year, ‘I’m back’, before moving on to the new executions.
The retro carbonated drinks maker, which first came to prominence in the 1970’s, will have a heavy advertising presence on Seven and Ten for a four-week period from November 20.
SodaStream is also sponsoring Ten’s It’s a knock-out as part of its Christmas push.
SodaStream MD Matt Gabelich said: “Many Australians have grown up with SodaStream and enjoyed hours of fun at home turning regular tap water into fabulous fizzy drinks. We’ve had a super year growing the business and now we can look forward to capping it off with such a fun campaign.”
I thought it was based on the classic ‘Kid gets an N64 for Christmas’ video on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFlcqWQVVuU
That has around 15 million views

The commercial, OK, not sure, but tbh it isn’t going to matter too much, sodastream is freakin awesome – I just use it for carbonated water. Never used the flavours, but the water out of my kitchen tap tastes better with bubbles.
