Sony buys US rights to Red Hill

Red HillSony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has picked up all US distribution rights to Patrick Hughes’ debut feature, the western thriller Red Hill.

The film was produced by Al Clark and premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival to mixed reviews. It stars Australian actor and True Blood star Ryan Kwanten.

The deal with sales agent Arclight Films was handled by SPWAG’s vice-president of acquisitions and productions, Scott Shooman, and vice-president of business affairs Dan Primozic.

Shooman said the film is “bad ass”, and a stylish contemporary version of the revenge western genre.

Red Hill follows young police officer Shane Cooper as he relocates to the small country town of Red Hill with his pregnant wife Alice to start a family. But when news of a prison break sends the local law enforcement officers – led by the town’s ruling presence, Old Bill – into a panic, Shane’s first day on duty rapidly turns into a nightmare.

The film has no release date in either Australia (where it will be distributed by Transmission) or the US.
