ABC and nurses target proposed cuts in two special interest election campaigns

MidwivesThe Friends of the ABC and the Australian Nursing & Midwives Federation have joined the growing number of special interest group campaigns aiming to influence voters in the lead up to the election.

Friends of the ABC is using the campaign to highlight cuts to the ABC as a threat to free speech and independent news coverage by targeting more than 30 marginal seats.

The ad, starring former Full Frontal comedian Peter Moon, looks to the future of the broadcaster under the current government regime where an older son and mother are watching Kerry O’Brien and Leigh Sales taking part in a reality show where O’Brien is forced to eat a lizard.

In the ad the couple lament the demise of the ABC as a credible news and current affairs source as a result of government cuts.

The Australian Nursing & Midwives Federation has teamed with The Core Agency for a campaign showing nurses and midwives with their hands tied.

The campaign, which runs across TV, outdoor and digital, highlights that the governmen’s plans to cut $57 billion from health spending, and finishes with the line: “If you don’t care, we can’t care’.

Lee Thomas, federal secretary of the ANMF, said it was a crucial message to get across to voters in coming weeks.

“Health and aged care are critical issues in this election and it’s about time all politicians took them seriously,” Thomas said.

“Our message is clear, the public and our members care about $57 billion in health cuts, safe staffing in aged care, Medicare and penalty rates and our politicians should as well.”
