Spielberg’s Pentagon Papers biopic The Post earns $2.5m from Australian audiences on opening weekend
Steven Spielberg’s latest film The Post made more than $2.5m on its opening weekend at the Australian box office, although its earnings were well behind that of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.
Starring Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks, The Post tells the true story of the journalists from The Washington Post who published the Pentagon Papers revealing the US government’s Vietnam War failings.
According to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia report, the film took $1.846m over the weekend.
But it wasn’t enough to defeat Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle at the weekend box office. The film collected an additional $4.729m across 465 screens over the weekend. It was top selling film for the third consecutive week.
Next was Pitch Perfect 3, which took $2.688m across 388 screens. Since its launch, it has made $15.672m.
Hugh Jackman’s new film The Greatest Showman came in third with $2.573m in earnings over the weekend. It has made $16.734m in total.
Fifth place after The Post went to Star Wars: The Last Jedi with its total earnings climbing to above $54m since opening. It pulled in $1.773m at the weekend box office.

Last Jedi has reached 4th place on the all time box office list.
Jumanji will score Sony’s 2nd biggest total ever behind Skyfall’s 49 million when it passes Spectre’s 36.2 million.
And Coco looks sure to join fellow 2017 release Cars 3 (13.3 million) as the worst 2 performers in Pixar’s 19 title history.
