Spierig Brothers to direct Dark Crystal sequel

Omnilab Media’s CEO Christopher Mapp has confirmed that Peter and Michael Spierig (Undead, Daybreakers) will direct Power of the Dark Crystal, to be shot in 3D combining live action, traditional puppetry, motion capture and VFX by Melbourne’s Iloura.

The sequel to 1982’s fantasy hit The Dark Crystal will be produced by Ambience Entertainment, with executive producers Brian Henson, Lisa Henson and Jason Lust, from The Jim Henson Company.

Other executive producers are Omnilab’s Matthew Street and David Whealy, and Cinemarket Films’ Peter D. Graves.

The script was written by Baz Luhrman collaborator Craig Pearce (Moulin Rouge), based on a script by Annette Duffy and David Odell.

Fantasy artist Brian Froud will once again be the conceptual designer.

The story will be set hundreds of years after the events of the first movie, when the world has once again fallen into darkness, and following the adventures of a mysterious girl made of fire who, together with a Gelfling outcast, steals a shard of the legendary Crystal in an attempt to reignite the dying sun that exists at the center of the planet.
