Sport dominates long weekend as networks shape up for a competitive Tuesday

Sport dominated the weekend with Nick Kyrgios’ five set thriller against Italian Andreas Seppi to become the youngest Australian Open men’s quarter-finalist in almost a quarter of a century on Sunday evening drawing a metro audience of 1.103m

The late broadcast was watched by a metro audience of 657,000.

Tonight promises to be more competitive of the year so far with Nine launching the new season of The Block two weeks before the ratings year at 7.30pm, whilst Kyrgios takes on Britain’s Andy Murray in the tennis quarter final at the same time, and Australia face off with the UAE for a place in the final of the Asian Cup on ABC and Fox Sports at 8pm.

Sunday night also saw the Perth Scorchers defeat the Melbourne Stars in Ten’s Big Bash to make it to the final against the Sydney Sixers on Wednesday. The first innings of the match grabbed a metro audience of 422,000, with 499,000 tuning in for the second session. The Sixers’ comprehensive defeat of Adelaide Strikers on Saturday had 606,000 viewers for session two, and 538,000 for the first innings.

Friday’s second innings of Australia’s tri-series cricket clash with England was watched by 921,000 metro viewers, according to overnight figures from OzTam, while the afternoon session had 518,000 viewers.

However, yesterday’s one day cricket match between Australia and India was washed out, with Nine playing movie Batman Begins instead which saw 227,000 metro viewers tune in according to numbers from Nine based on OzTam timings.

Night eight of the Australian Open on Australia Day evening was watched by 793,000 metro viewers, helping Seven win the night with an audience share of 23.6 per cent. During the day the broadcast of the tennis tournament was watched by 504,000 while the late broadcast lured a metro crowd of 457,000.

Nine grabbed an audience share of 16.6 per cent while Ten managed to secure a share of 13.3 per cent and the ABC settled for a share of 10 per cent.

Ten’s Family Feud was the most watched non-news, non-sport show of the evening, grabbing a metro audience of 549,000 at 6pm. The Project at 6.30 was watched by 416,000 with the second half of the show grabbing a metro audience of 496,000. A repeat of the Modern Family Australia episode at 8pm was watched by 448,000. Ten’s 8.30pm movie Australia had a metro audience of 391,000.

Meanwhile on the ABC, 7.30 Summer was watched by 499,000 while a repeat of QI grabbed an audience of 445,000. A repeat of Grand Designs at 8.30pm attracted an audience of 406,000.

The Governor-General’s Australia Day Address at 6.55pm was watched by 406,000 metro viewers.

Nine News at 6pm won the news battle, pulling a metro audience of 1.079m while Seven News at 6pm was watched by 1.031m. Seven News or Today Tonight at 6.30pm grabbed an audience of 1.028m.

Friday also saw Ten’s morning show Studio Ten pick up its highest ever ratings with 89,000 for its full run, and averaging 109,000 from 9.30am to 11am, according to Ten figures.

In the Asian Cup Japan’s surprise defeat to the UAE on Friday evening was watched by 135,000 viewers on Fox Sports.
