Sport stars share their video chat calls in Optus’ ‘G’day a Day’ campaign

In lieu of live sports being on air, Optus is bringing video chats between Australian athletes to the public for its new ‘G’day a Day’ campaign.

Optus’ head of marketing Mel Hopkins said the campaign aims to inspire Australians to connect with others as they adjust to the new way of life.

“We are all adjusting to different ways of living, working and connecting but at Optus, we are determined to do whatever we can to support our customers in this challenge,” Hopkins said.

“Our goal, as always, is to deliver exceptional connectivity, but we also want to share ways and encourage Australians to stay positive as we find new ways forward.”

The first episode of ‘G’day a Day’ features a call between sports presenter Mel McLaughlin and Olympic gold medalist swimmer Mack Horton, discussing how they are entertaining themselves during isolation.

Each day, Optus will share a new video-call. Other stars who will take part include Ian Thorpe, Formula One driver Daniel Ricciardo, Rugby Sevens player Ellia Green, explorer Jade Hameister and 800m runner Joseph Deng.

McLaughlin said: “We know everyone has had to make changes to the way they socialise, but we have an opportunity to keep each other positive, and we think that starts by saying G’day.”

Thorpe added: “We’re on a mission to get Australians to video call each other and have a chat about what they are doing to stay positive.”

The campaign was created by TBWA Sydney.

Chief creative officer, Andy DiLallo, said: “The lock-down has created a wonderful window of opportunity for people to check up one another and who better to facilitate than Optus. We’re really proud of the work that’s been developed in reaction to COVID-19 and look forward to spreading the Optimism in the days and weeks to come.”

Stars of the campaign will encourage Australians to check in on a friend, family member or work colleague.

Optus has introduced a range of initiatives to assist its customers, including waiving eligible health workers’ Optus postpaid mobile access charges for three months, boosting eligible mobile data allowances, and suspending payment of Optus Sport subscription fees until 31 May, 2020.
