Star Wars sets sights on Avatar after smashing $50m box office mark in less than a fortnight

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has easily outstripped its rivals to become by far the highest grossing movie of the year in Australia with total takings of $50.34m less than two weeks after release.

The seventh space adventure claimed $11.8m in the box office over the weekend on 832 screens, while strong Christmas week attendances took it from the $29m of its opening weekend.

It now has the Australian box office record of $105m held by Avatar firmly in its sights.

While the box office rankings have been disrupted by the Christmas period Disney’s latest animated adventure The Good Dinosaur was the second biggest film of the weekend with $2.5m in taking for the family film.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 and the latest James Bond film Spectre also continue to perform well with total takings now standing at $28.3m and $33.8m respectively.

Australian film The Dressmaker now has takings of $18.2m in the local box office.
