Still waiting at the box office
Claire McCarthy’s Indian-set drama The Waiting City (Hopcotch) has topped the limited release chart on its second weekend, adding $99,818 (average $3,992) for a total of $355,283. The film dropped 27 percent compared to the previous week.
Animal Kingdom (Madman) is about to reach the $4.5m mark, and remains at number 10 – a position it’s held for four weeks.
Goalpost Pictures and Ronin Films also brought Kay Pavlou’s Mary back to cinemas after 15 years, with a limited release – on session a day only – at Sydney’s Cremorne Orpheum and Randwick Ritz. The film, about the life of Mary Mackillop, was restored for the release.
A spokesperson said they wouldn’t have box office results until Thursday: “It will be small, as expected, probably around $1,100 across two cinemas but there is increasing interest from schools.”
The film will have a minimum three-week run at these cinemas, and will then start a regional tour on August 19 at Mount Victoria and Illawarra (Greater Union Shellharbour and Wollongong) with Sawtell, Gunnedah, Bingara, Tenterfield, Nambour and The Trak (Adelaide) all confirmed to follow.
Inception (Roadshow) debuted at number one, with $7.4m from 413 screens (average $17,986). The Christopher Nolan thriller took the top spot from last week’s #1, Tom Cruise vehicle Knight & Day (Fox); prior to its release in the US on July 16, industry analysts questioned Inception‘s box office potential, as it was deemed “too smart” for a summer release – it went on to open with U$62.7 million and has grossed U$148.9 as of July 26.
Disney’s Toy Story 3 has become the company’s most successful title of all time in Australia, reaching $38.87m since its June 24 release and leaving the second Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2007) behind.
