Streem launches in Canberra with Sky News and government alum

Media monitoring company, Streem, has established a Canberra presence, appointing David Sharaz to the newly-created role of ACT business manager.

Sharaz – who previously worked at Sky News as a reporter, before spending seven months as a media advisor in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet – will introduce government departments who have not already used Streem to the platform.

Streem’s list of government clients included the Departments of: Prime Minister and Cabinet, Defence, Treasury, Veterans’ Affairs, and Finance, in addition to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, Australian Taxation Office, and Productivity Commission.

The Federal Government’s media monitoring contracts were worth over $17 million in 2019, Streem said, although not all departments and agencies make their contract information available.

“Streem has a strong track record among departments and MPs’ offices. Having worked on both the media and government side, David brings tremendous insight to the role, as well as close relationships forged over his decade living in the capital,” the business’ CEO, Elgar Welch, said.

“Streem has always performed well in open government tenders. We’re very confident that our realtime media platform is superior to anything else on the market and can also result in savings for departments.

“Part of David’s role will be convincing teams to take that first step and follow their counterparts to see the credible choice they now have in media monitoring.”

Last year, Streem signed a new licensing agreement with the Copyright Agency, pulling out of tribunal action – of which rivals iSentia and Meltwater were also a part – against the agency to ink the deal.

In 2020, it also appointed Storyful’s former executive director, Asha Oberoi, in the new role of insights and reporting lead, and promoted Nina Harriott to become the business’ first chief customer officer.

Sharaz explained: “Politics, policy and media are Canberra obsessions, and I’m no exception.

“Streem has an outstanding reputation among existing clients here, so my role is to spread the word and help departments understand the massive advantage Streem brings to realtime media monitoring.”
