Sunrise ends second week of morning TV programming 62,000 metro viewers ahead of Today

Sunrise has ended the second week of morning TV programming after the summer break 62,000 metro viewers ahead of rival Today.

Friday morning’s episodes of Sunrise and Today secured 272,000 and 208,000 metro viewers respectively, while the gap jumped to 158,000 viewers once regional numbers were added. 459,000 viewers nationally watched David Koch and Samantha Armytage’s Sunrise, while 301,000 saw Karl Stefanovic and Allison Langdon complete their second week on air together.

However, the results did see Nine’s Today narrow the widening margin Sunrise established earlier in the week, both in terms of metropolitan and national audiences. The official 40-week survey calendar that TV networks measure their success against begins on 9 February, with pundits keen to see where the gap between the morning shows settles once Stefanovic and Langdon solidify their dynamic and the official ratings period begins.

Unsurprisingly, Seven News was Friday’s top-performing program with 871,000 metro viewers and 802,000 for its 6:30pm half hour. Nine News pulled 752,000 and 746,000 for those slots, respectively. ABC News was next in line on 564,000.

Seven’s consistent performers The Chase Australia and Better Homes and Gardens pulled 462,000 and 370,000 metro viewers, respectively. Meanwhile, Nine’s A Current Affair had 525,000 metro viewers and Hot Seat 400,000.

The public broadcasters repeats of British detective drama Endeavour (438,000 metro viewers) and British-French crime series Death in Paradise (435,000) both performed well in the evening, while Ten’s best-performing program of the night was 10 News First, on 349,000 metro viewers.

Friday night’s movie offerings The Fugitive on Seven and Thor on Nine both cracked the top 20 programs. 287,000 metro viewers tuned in to watch The Fugitive, the 1993 crime movie starring Harrison Ford, while 292,000 watched Chris Hemsworth take on the titular role in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, the third and most recent film in the Thor series.

Nine won the night with a 30.2% network share, while Seven landed on 25.7%, Ten 16% and the ABC 18.3%.

On a channel basis, Seven pushed ahead of Nine with a 18.2% to 17.3% share, respectively, while 9Gem was the best-performing multi-channel on 6.6%.
