Sunrise’s David Koch extends contract for another two years

Seven’s breakfast show co-host, David Koch, has extended his contract for an additional two years.

Koch first joined the breakfast television program 16 years ago, and has now been signed until the end of 2020.

Koch’s contract is extended until the end of 2020

Koch confirmed his contract had been renewed for two years, adding he was delighted the viewers and Seven were keen to sign him.

“I’m delighted. I love doing Sunrise, it’s been a long time to start off by being asked to fill in for three months and that was 16 years ago, so I love the show,” he told Mumbrella.

“I love the variety of the show, I am really pleased viewers and the bosses have asked me to do another two years.”

Koch did not believe he would have continued beyond those first three months, adding no one really watched or care about the show.

“But it allowed us to try different things,” he added. “We were bit like a start up back then, we could try different things and see what made them work. It also fits in with my other job, the family business, with Pinstripe Media, and it so it dovetails pretty well.”

According to OzTAM’s overnight figures, Sunrise’s metro audience usually sits around the 250,000 viewer mark, while Nine’s Today Show has been slightly behind. Last year, Nine’s Today Show lost long-standing co-host Lisa Wilkinson, later replacing her with Georgie Gardner.

And while Koch said the breakfast TV market is still incredibly competitive, it keeps Sunrise on its toes. When asked whether there was room for another breakfast show, Koch said “never say never”.

“It’s been tried before,” he said. “You would be silly to say that there’s not room for another alternative, but it will depend how good it is.”

The Australian had reported Koch was in preliminary negotiations with the CEO of Your Money, Kylie Merritt, about a role with the new free-to-air channel.
