Sydney radio ratings: Breakfast crown comes at perfect time for Kyle & Jackie O’s $200m deal discussions

Sydney radio duo Kyle and Jackie O have clawed back the breakfast crown from Ben Fordham in the latest Radio 360 survey, just in time to bolster their massive contract negotiation, speculated to be worth around $200 million over ten years.

After two consecutive surveys in second place, the KIIS FM breakfast pair (14.7%) made their comeback against 2GB’s Fordham (14.2%) in Survey 6. Kyle and Jackie O were up 0.8 points while Fordham was down 0.4 points.

Kyle and Jackie O’s influence over the entire station’s performance was also evident – every weekday timeslot on KIIS FM saw an increase of between 0.7 to 1.5 points.

The duo’s contract with KIIS owner ARN continues until the end of 2024, although negotiations are reportedly underway, and may also involve interest from rival Southern Cross Austereo. SCA owns 2DAY-FM, which was the home of Kyle and Jackie O until their defection to KIIS a decade ago. The current 2DAY FM breakfast show recorded a 4.6% share this survey.

Last month it was reported the pair is looking for a $200 million deal – $10 million a year, each, for ten years. Such a deal would be the largest talent agreement in Australian media history.

While 2GB is still the station leader in overall people (11.1%) compared to KIIS FM (10.9%), the lead has narrowed significantly. It saw a second consecutive dip in people 10+, with a decline in every slot except for mornings, where Ray Hadley recorded a 0.9% increase to 13.7%.

The station is in an especially challenging position in Drive, where Chris O’Keefe is sitting in the sixth place. Cumulative audiences were down in both Afternoon and Drive.

Elsewhere, ABC Sydney is the biggest upward mover in overall audience share – up 1.2 points with a jump across all weekday and weekend slots.

SCA’s Triple M and 2Day FM were flat in overall and breakfast, but Gus Worland, Jude Bolton and Wendell Sailor on Triple M Drive snared a 1.2 point increase.

The overall streaming share in survey six was:

  • 2GB: 19.4%
  • ABC Sydney: 10.7%
  • KIIS 1065: 9.1%
  • Smoothfm 95.3: 8.9%
  • 2JJJ: 5.5%

The streaming breakfast share in survey six was:

  • 2GB: 27.4%
  • ABC Sydney: 12.3%
  • KIIS 1065: 9.8%
  • 2RN: 7.6%
  • Smoothfm 95.3: 5.9%

The survey period ran from 9 July to 16 September.
