T-Mobile flashmobs again
Telco brand T-Mobile summoned a flashmob for a second time in London. On this occasion, it was to persuade 13,500 people in Trafalgar Square to join in a rendition of Hey Jude.
T-Mobile’s first big flashmob production was when hundreds of dancers took over Liverpool Street station for a performance that then became an extended ad break.
My unabridged thoughts can be found here – http://tinyurl.com/t-mobile-rant – but in a nutshell, I think they’ve fallen foul of their prior success. Even though the last event was orchestrated, there was still a joyous spontaneity about it. The fact that they ran teasers for this one with a Hollywood-style soundtrack, telling people to be there, made it more like an event trying to get into the Guinness Book of Records.
I fear it lost its soul and became a little gratuitous.

Simon,
Are you saying that a telco that finally, almost by accident, hits a chord with its customers, would squeeze every last drop from rehashes of the same idea?
That would never happen with Telstra, BigPond or Optus.
Oh.
