Tabcorp strikes agreement with News Corp to set up new punting venture in the UK
Australian gaming giant Tabcorp has signed a deal with News UK that will see the business enter the UK in partnership with the country’s biggest daily newspaper The Sun.
The 10 year deal for the development of the an online wagering business in the UK and Ireland under the banner of Sun Bets, will allow Tabcorp to tap into The Sun’s audience of football fans.
Tabcorp hopes to leverage the 10 million readers of the paper, 1 million of whom are football fans, across existing Sun properties including print and digital as well as sports and racing products including Dream Team FC, Favourite and Goals.
David Attenborough, managing director and chief executive of Tabcorp, said the partnership gave the company a foot in the door of the giant $7 billion online gaming market in the UK and Ireland.
“This partnership provides us with the opportunity to create a leading online bookmaker in the UK market under the Sun Bets brand over the coming years and fits with our strategy of pursuing close-to-core international opportunities,” said Attenborough.
News UK CEO Rebekah Brooks said the partnership was pivotal to the digital plans for the business.
Under the terms of the agreement News will handle internal and external media promotion while Tabcorp will share revenue from the new business.
