TED to live stream to Bondi Pavilion

Global ideas conference TED will live stream its annual event from the US to Bondi Pavilion in Sydney on March 3.

The announcement:

21 February 2011: In an Australian first, the global ideas event TED will share a full day of its annual Long Beach, California conference with a live audience in Sydney on Thursday 3 March 2011.

Globally acknowledged as one of the world’s most influential new media brands, TED is a US based not-for-profit enterprise devoted to the propagation of “Ideas Worth Spreading.” The annual TED Conference in Long Beach is at the heart of the global TED movement.

The TED2011 Conference, “The Rediscovery of Wonder,” will be held from 28 February to 4 March 2011 in Long Beach, California. Bill Gates is guest curator for Day 2 of the program, with the speaker lineup for the day including: Morgan Spurlock (Supersize Me), Julie Taymor (The Tempest, The Lion King), Bill Ford (Ford Motor Co.), Indra Nooyi (CEO PepsiCo), Antony (Antony & the Johnsons) along with a some surprise guests. For more details on the full speakers line up see: http://conferences.ted.com/TED2011/program/guide.php

The free event is being organised by TEDxSydney in collaboration with the Bondi Pavilion and the Tamarama Rock Surfers Theatre Company (taking up residency at the Theatre later in March). This event is the one of the first to be held at the freshly refurbished venue on Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach and is open to anyone from the public. The live webstream will commence at 3:30AM on Thursday 3 March and run through to around 1:45PM on the same day.

With a limited capacity in the theatre, seating will be on a first-come, first served basis. Those interested in attending are encouraged to register online at http://TEDxSydney.com

The live stream precedes TEDxSydney which will showcase Australian speakers and performers at CarriageWorks in Eveleigh on Saturday 28 May 2011. Further information can be found on on the TEDxSydney website. Applications to attend that event will be open in March. All registered TEDxSydney members will be notified in advance of that time.

Licensee Remo Giuffre says: “TED is a unique learning environment which pays homage to the potency of ideas. There are hundreds of thousands of Australian devotees who follow TED talks on the global website. But with capacity for only 1,000 guests in the audience at the Long Beach event, few Australians ever get the chance to participate in person. We jumped at the opportunity to create a satellite event to bring this incredible content live a local audience. The event at the Pavilion will be a fun and somewhat surreal experience.

“This simulcast initiative sets the stage for our own event, TEDxSydney in May which will continue in its mission to establish a platform for local thinkers, doers and storytellers. With speakers from last year’s TEDxSydney already featured on the global website, there are some terrific links being established between Australia and TED in the United States.”
