Mumbrella live blog: Tasty Video Bits

This is Mumbrella’s live blog and today we’re coming to you from the Sydney Opera House, TedxSydney event. Over the course of today we’ll be posting all the Tasty Video Bits, right after they are shown live at the event. Refresh the page for the latest updates.

5.35pm – That’s it for us today from TedxSydney. Thanks to everyone who retweeted the blog, we hope you enjoyed all the Tasty Video Bits.

5.32pm – A bit of comedy to finish the day. This one is called Honourable Discharge, again from Severe Comedy.

4.55pm – Our second last video of the day is Sky from AVEOE and it asks you to question some of the stereotypes we have around indigenous Australians.

4.35pm – This is an interesting video with a strong recycling message from Sydney-based, digital strategy consultancy Drink Digital. Rather than lecturing the audience it shows them a number of ‘Simple Life Hacks’ and then asks them if they are now ‘feeling smart’.

3.25pm – Walking and texting can be dangerous. Our obsession with devices and the online world is highlighted by the crew from Kapow Pictures in this 30 second cartoon called ‘Text Walker‘.

2.58pm – This is an interesting one. Did you know Chip Monck, the man who was master of ceremonies at Woodstock, now lived in Melbourne? Here in this three minute video called ‘Chip’, by Opening Act Runtime, he talks about his life and some of his adventures.

2.30pm – Dating is complicated and these two take complicated to a whole other level in ‘The Battle of Who Cares Less’. A definite crowd favourite the video was created by Severe Comedy a production company who was responsible for the Justice League / Man of Steel parody series.

12.30pm – If you checked out last year’s TedxSydney TVBs you might remember Hank the dog, who featured in this video from The Projects.

Anyway Hank is back and this year he has a new dog friend Bruce who has story to tell in ‘Hank and Bruce’.

11.50am – Ok so production collective Paper Moose have come up with what can only be described an… interesting solution to the problem of house prices and a lack of space our homes in Australia’s big cities.

Dreaming Small’ definitely wins points for being funny and it’s probably worth noting that they were behind one of last year’s most interesting videos Strawberries, which also had a smallness theme.

11.20am – This video called ‘John was a Good Man’ is probably going to be one of the most talked about videos from this year’s TedxSydney.

It was created by film makers Kate Kazokas & Lucy Adelaide and features a variety of well known faces such as Jane Caro, Dr Karl, Philip Nitschke, Paul McDermott and others, each telling a short eulogy of their lives to date, using third person, and with video images of themselves being projected onto their own faces. This is probably our favourite TVB so far. What do you think?

10.44am – This is ‘Start Now‘ by Agent Morphe Design and shows passionate female athletes telling their stories.

10.14am – Our next video is called ‘Reverse Garbage’ and was created by PR firm Launch Group and production house Tribal Apes. Feel free to give us your feedback on the various videos in the comment thread below.

9.45am – Well the first Tasty Video Bit has just been shown. The video is called ‘More than Just Words’ is from Datasaurus-rex and 25&Sunny who analysed the words most used in Ted talks globally. One word more than any other stood out.

9.00am – Well TedxSydney is about to start and the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall is filling up but remember you can also watch the main talks at home via the live feed.

6.45am – Welcome to the Mumbrella live blog of the TedxSydney event. As we mentioned earlier in the week, we’ll be posting regular videos of TedxSydney’s Tasty Video Bits (TVB) throughout today.

If you want to get a taste of what a TVB is, check out one of last year’s favourites below, called First Taste, it was created by Saatchi & Heckler and has now been viewed on YouTube 2.4m times.

As Marque Owen, director of video content at TedxSydney, explained earlier this week: “We like to think of (Tasty Video Bits) as being a little sorbet between the more intellectual heavy-lifting of the Ted day.

“This years selection is a very varied and eclectic mix including emerging producers and established geniuses. We have a mix of animations and live actions.”

It should be interesting day, so remember to check back at this page if you want to get one of the first looks at some the interesting pieces of creative work from TedxSydney and these 13 TVB finalists:
