Ten could go back on sale again
Network Ten, arguably the most under-pressure of Australia’s commercial TV channels could end up back on the block, its biggest shareholder has conceded.
CanWest, which owns just over half of the network ,had tried to sell the station in 2007 but couldn’t get the price it wanted.
But the company’s chief financial officer has conceded that because its investment in Ten is guaranteed against its loans, it could be forced to sell if it fails to hit targets.
While all three of Australia’s commercial free-to-air networks are going to be under pressure this year, Ten arguably has it the worst. Its Big Brother franchise, which had shored up its advertiser-friendly younger demographic, died last year, and the launch of free digital channels by Nine and Seven will allow them to chase this audience head-on.
