Ten’s Modern Family tops key advertising demos but audience turns away from The New Normal

Modern Family, MumbrellaTen’s Modern Family topped key advertising demographics in Sunday night’s ratings although the network quickly lost its audience when The New Normal followed.

Modern Family rated 1.034m and was sixth in total viewers. It was the number one show for the evening across the 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54 demographics.

But The New Normal, also a US family comedy, averaged just 536,000.

Ten’s thriller Homeland then recovered slightly, averaging a total of 618,000 viewers. It was second in its 8.30pm time slot in 16-39 and 18-49 and third in 25-54.

According to preliminary overnight metro ratings from OzTAM, Nine’s 60 Minutes at 7.30pm averaged 1.155m viewers. It was third in the night for total viewers, fourth in 16-39 and third in 18-49 and 25-54.

Seven’s Border Security – Australia’s Front Line, also at 7.30pm, rated 945,000 in total viewers. It  was 12th in 16-39, 10th in 18-49 and 9th in 25-54.

The ABC’s telemovie The Mystery of a Hansom Cab produced decent ratings for the public broadcaster. Set in Melbourne in the 19th Century, the film was produced by Burberry Entertainment’s Margot McDonald, adapted from the Fergus Hume novel of the same name by Glen Dolman, and directed by Underbelly director Shawn Seet. The movie rated 826,000 and was 13th for the evening in total viewers.

The Mystery Of A Hansom Cab was less attractive to younger audiences. It was 37th for the night in the 16-39 demo, 29th in 18-49 and 25th in 25-54.

Overall, it was second behind Nine’s House Husbands in its 8.30pm time slot. House Husbands rated 1.045m and was fourth in total viewers for the evening.

In channel share, SBS1 had a terrible night coming ninth with just 3%. As well as the four main channels, the special broadcaster was behind One on 4.7%, GO! on 4.4%, 7mate on 4%, and 7TWO on 3.7%.

Seven won the night in channel share, taking 21.7% edging out Nine’s 21.3%. ABC1 took a 14.9% share while Ten was fourth on 12.3%.
