That Thursday feeling

Thursdays just aren’t what they used to be.

Just two months ago, this was the day that The Australian’s Media section dropped, and so did the Sydney Morning Herald’s.

The Oz media section moved to Mondays back in October, and as of today it looks like the Herald’s has vanished altogether. I hear on the grapevine that it will return in some form after Christmas, but with more of a consumer focus. I’ve even heard it described (and subsequently denied) as a print version of The Gruen Transfer.

If it is more consumer-focused, this strikes me as A Good Thing. It’s always puzzled me just how obsessed our metro newspapers have been with the minutiae of advertising agencies. I suspect it’s because a lot of the journos originally worked on the trade press titles and haven’t fully adjusted to writing for a wider audience.
