The AFR is launching a luxe watch fair

The Australian Financial Review is launching the country’s first prestige watch fair, with 13 top timepiece makers taking part.

About Time will feature some of the highlights from Geneva’s famed Watches and Wonders event along with other recent releases.

Among the participants are Cartier, IWC, Tag Heuer, Chopard, Hublot, Louis Vuitton, Grand Seiko, and Piaget. The fair will be held in Sydney over days, beginning 22 September, and entry is free.

Bani McSpedden, the AFR’s watch editor, said the event was “long overdue”.

“The Financial Review pioneered coverage of the watch industry in Australia and we’re the only media outlet that covers mechanical watchmakers as the serious businesses that they have become,” McSpedden said.

“The About Time Watch Fair demonstrates how committed the Financial Review is to deepening our coverage in this area.”

The Australian Financial Review Magazine has a print readership of 481,000 – up 14% year-on-year according to the latest Roy Morgan figures.

“We can see from digital readership data how engaged our subscribers and readers are with news about watches,” Matthew Drummond, editor of AFR Magazine, said.

“The Financial Review has often partnered with individual brands to hold events for our subscribers, but this is the first time we’ve held an industry-wide fair in the luxury space. Given our readers’ interest in watches, we’re confident it will be a resounding success.”

According to official Swiss export figures, sales of watches in the Oceania region are up 21 per cent in the year to May, which is a rate of growth double the rest of Asia.
