The Block to return for season 15 on 4 August

Nine’s renovation ratings grabber, The Block, will return to the network for its 15th season on 4 August at 7pm.

This time, contestants will be renovating the Oslo Hotel in Melbourne’s St Kilda, very near 2018’s project The Gatwick.

The five couples will turn the building into five three-storey homes in a competition to leave with $100,000 in prize money and any profit from the sale of their project.

Tess and Luke, El’ise and Matt, Jesse and Mel, Mitch and Mark, and Andy and Deb are the couples who will join returning host Scott Cam, co-host Shelley Craft, and judges Neale Whitaker, Shaynna Blaze and Darren Palmer, as well as site foremen Keith and Dan.

The Block has been a reality win for Nine. 2018 saw it hit a series high of 1.293m viewers midway through, before growing further to 2.021m for the final episode. Nine also launched an online platform, The Block 365, which was home to a host of spin-off and behind-the-scenes content. It was backed with coverage from across the 9Honey platform.

The Block first hit screens in 2003 and was hosted by Jamie Durie for two seasons. It was then revived by Nine after a six-year break, returning in 2010 with Cam at the helm. Craft joined him in the fourth season.

The show has been filmed in both Victoria and New South Wales, with the initial season taking place in Bondi. After a lull in ratings around season 10, the show has continued to deliver big numbers for Nine, with the last four seasons consistently delivering over or near 1m viewers each episode. It’s won six Logie awards including back-to-back Best Reality Program for 2016 and 2017.

A cooling market in Melbourne put pressure on the results of the 2018 season, which saw five apartments hit the market at once, but the winning team of Hayden and Sara smashed their reserve, landing $3.02m for their project, topping the price of both of the much-lauded penthouse apartments.

The show also made headlines in 2017 when comedian and Ten host Dave Hughes ended up purchasing one of the properties for what was considered to be well over the value. Hughes has since rented out the property.
