The Brisbane Broncos: Where the rejection is public

What with the various shenanigans involving NRL, it’s no surprise that the Brisbane Broncos have been advertising for a manager of marketing and communications.

And by the looks of it, there were plenty of applicants.

The unsuccessful ones got the bad news yesterday with a not-very-personalised email:

Brisbane Broncos Manager- Marketing & Communications Position

Thank you for your recent application for the above position. We do appreciate the time and effort you spent in applying.

We received many applications for this position and unfortunately you have not been successful on this occasion. We would encourage you to apply for any suitable roles that we may advertise in the future.

Please accept our best wishes for your future job search activities.

Yours sincerely,

NRMA Insurance Brisbane Broncos

So not-very-personalised, that they bunged all of the applicants into the same email – and didn’t bother to blind copy them. Which meant that all the applicants could see who their fellow failures were.

A grumpy email chain quickly developed. Dr Mumbo will leave the names out of it:

Dear Brisbane Broncos,

Thank you for letting me (us) know that I (we) were unsuccessful.

I find the bulk email however rude and offensive.

Confidentiality is paramount in the recruitment process and you have breached that trust.

I wish the successful candidate all the best.

Kind Regards,

Thanks Xxxxxx for letting us know. I just realised the email was a bulk email. How unprofessional, embarrassing and rude of the NRMA Insurance Brisbane Broncos! You obviously don’t have a HR advisor. Rule #1in recruitment is confidentiality. Where is Tim Burrows when you need him?

So unprofessional. I withdraw my application (even post-recruitment process) as well as my interest to be involved with the Brisbane Broncos now or in the future.

Good luck to the successful candidate.

(Where indeed?)

If only the Brisbane Broncos had some sort of marketing and communications manager on staff to clear up the mess.
