The Lion King tops another weekend at Australian box office as it nears US$1bn globally

As it nears US$1bn in global revenue, Disney’s remake of The Lion King has also continued to find success in Australia, bringing in another AU$11.25m across the weekend box office, to build a total of $41.02m.

Despite dropping 45% week on week, the film didn’t need to do much to stay on top. The closest challenger was Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: Far From Home which brought in $1.3m for its fifth week out.

Taking third spot was Andre Reiu’s 2019 Maastricht Concert – Shall We Dance? which took $1.24m across its debut weekend. Distributed by Piece of Magic Entertainment, the title showed over 152 screens compared to Spider-Man’s 475, and The Lion King’s 857.

Toy Story 4 held the fourth spot, after six weeks in the box office it still took $839,968 across 277 screens, adding to a total of $39.23m.

Beatles-themed comedy Yesterday brought in a further $612,825, a 27% drop from the week prior, but adding to a total of $11.91m in the Australian box office.

The two other newcomers in the top 10 were Chal Mera Putt which took $313,404 across 33 screens, and The Keeper which brought in $224,384 across 95 screens.

Chal Mera Putt is a Indian Punjabi-language dramedy directed by Janjot Singh which follows the story of a group of illegal immigrants living in the city of Birmingham and the struggle to get their permanent residency. The Keeper is a British-German film following the story of a relationship between a young English woman and a German Prisoner of War.

Chal Mera Putt took sixth place in the top 10, while The Keeper took eighth. The Secret Life of Pets 2 held onto seventh with $287,866 across 223 screens, while Apollo 11 and Ardaas Karaan rounded out the list.
