The Office Australia is an international success
The Office Australia has quickly become one of the most streamed shows on Prime Video in dozens of countries, making it the most successful Australian Prime Video Original to date.
According to Amazon’s own figures, The Office is the most successful Australian Prime Video Original locally, with the biggest opening weekend viewership for any Australian title. Since 2019, Prime Video has commissioned 30 original series and features in Australia.
The show is currently the top show in Australia on the streamer, and has hit #1 in four other territories since launching on October 18, including New Zealand and Singapore, and the top 3 in 37 countries.
It’s in the top 5 in 65 countries, and the top 10 in a massive 102 countries – including the franchise’s birthplace, the UK.
Sarah Christie, head of Australian Originals Amazon MGM Studios said, “We are so proud of The Office and thrilled to see Hannah Howard and her team at Flinley Craddick resonate so strongly with Australian and international audiences.”
Hwei Loke, head of Prime Video Australia, told Mumbrella earlier this month the show “feels familiar yet fresh” due to the Australian twist on the format.
“It has the same kind of archetypes of, you know, The Office workers,” Loke explains.
“But then at the same time, we have this brilliant Australian take on it. It’s really fresh Australian humour, Australian situations, you know, one episode centres around Melbourne Cup, for example.
“And then, we have this fantastic Australian female boss played by Felicity Ward in the role of Hannah Howard, and she is just delightfully inept and relatable and people are really going to fall in love with her, just like they did with all of the prior boss versions.”
Keep up to date with the latest in media and marketing
Does it also count how many minutes of it people have streamed? Would be interesting to see. The Office brand has appeal and would draw people in immediately, however the show is awful. Truly awful.
I doubt many people completed the entire season.

This doesn’t mean it’s successful, just that many people have watched it to see how awful it truly is. It isn’t funny at all and is the most terrible comedy tv series that Australia has made in recent times. It’s an embarrassment to our country!

Well deserved success. They’ve done a great job with it

I could imagine some of the base level pattern recognition being enjoyable for perhaps some of the US market, the same market that enjoys Big Bang Theory as comedy or the way a toddler enjoys flipping “Snap!” cards in order to see two things that are similar (even when they might have confused a snake with a garden hose). I could believe there’s also a morbid fascination in seeing something resurrected in a cultural Frankenstein-Ian experiment that needs to be seen to be believed, that would be driving views. It being enjoyed around the world, I cannot believe.
