The Sydney Symphony Orchestra unveils new director of marketing

The Sydney Symphony Orchestra has appointed a new director of marketing whose sales and marketing credentials in the performing arts spans over two decades.

Charles Buchanan has been named as the music body’s marketing director.

With a career spanning Australia and the United States, Buchanan’s most recent gig saw him lead the marketing team of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra where he served as senior director, marketing and audience development for just over two-and-a-half years.

Buchanan is credited with helping the company restore its ticket sales and bounce back from the pandemic.

Prior to that, the long-time performing arts marketing expert was the director, marketing for the New York Philharmonic where he, according to his LinkedIn, “shap[ed] and execut[ed] marketing, audience development, and brand strategies” for the New York City-based orchestra.

Buchanan also spent time in Australia from mid-2014 to mid-2016 where he served as a senior data analyst, data and insights for the Sydney Opera House.

Through his work, he contributed to rolling out the data and insights team for the organisation’s marketing department, allowing them to leverage analytics for greater campaign optimisation and to gain a deeper understanding of audiences.

“We’re delighted to have Charles join the Sydney Symphony Orchestra as our new Director of Marketing,” the Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s chief executive officer, Craig Whitehead, revealed.

“His proven expertise and fresh perspectives will be invaluable, and we’re confident that he will develop strong connections across our teams, and with musicians, to further our audience development. I look forward to the great work ahead.”

Buchanan’s appointment is effective immediately.
