The time Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers became a brand marketer for a day: ‘Better than anything we could have scripted’
The chief marketing officer of Fender has pretty much seen and done it all, but what he might not have expected was for a music icon to want to lead a campaign.
Appearing on the latest episode of Mumbrella’s one-on-one podcast series, Evan Jones shared some of his most memorable projects, one of which came not long after he joined the legendary music brand in 2015.
Jones recalled working with Red Hot Chili Peppers’ bassist, Flea, on a project surrounding the promotion of a signature pink shell bass guitar.

“In working through how we are going to launch the bass, [Flea] was adamant that his daughter was involved in the content creation,” Jones explained.
“And we kept saying, ‘No, Flea, we’re going to get involved. We’ll help. We’ll build it.’ He said, ’No, no, no. We got it.’
“So, we had a series of production meetings and in the end, he ended up shooting the video by himself with his daughter at his house in Malibu. And what came back was better than anything we could have scripted.”

Jones continued: “The authenticity of what he delivered was powerful. And it was a good early kind of hint for me that, you know, really empowering these artists that we work with to tell their story was going to be a really interesting formula. I think that was powerful.”
On the new one-on-one episode, Jones discusses celebrations and campaigns for Fender’s 70th anniversary of the Stratocaster guitar, his career, including previous stints at Nike and New Era Cap, and what the brand has in store for 2024.
