The Top Half launches to give women in Northern Australia their own media voice

Darwin journalist and podcaster Molly Upstill has launched The Top Half, a media outlet dedicated to the lifestyle, needs and perspectives of women in Australia’s tropical north.

The announcement:

After nearly a decade living in North Australia, Darwin journalist and podcaster Molly Upstill has launched The Top Half, a women’s media outlet targeted at the unique lifestyle lived by women in Australia’s tropical north.

The Top Half aims to make women in North Australia feel seen and heard, through targeted news centred around their lifestyle, health, beauty, fashion and light news.

“After so long working in the media, and seeing the very southern-focused, four-season media cycle, it was so obvious to me there was a huge gap of thousands of women who just aren’t engaged with this content,” she said.

“While Sydney and Melbourne shiver through cold and bleak winters, we are up here living through the most perfect weather you could hope for yet the media is selling us woollen trench coats and leather boots. It’s just not the reality of life up here as our weather rivals Europe and we’re sipping Aperol Spritz in 32 degrees.

“Similarly, our needs and wants over the summer is vastly different to that of the south, and our news just isn’t relevant so The Top Half aims to change that narrative.”

“I want to create something that women in Far North Queensland, Darwin and Northern WA can call their own, and turn to for when traditional media just isn’t catering to them.”

Mrs Upstill is looking for contributors as she looks to grow the platform, encouraging other like-minded women to get involved through opinion pieces or tidbits from their life.

“The Top Half has seen wonderful growth so far, and I’m excited to see how it goes in the months to come.”

To support the growth of The Top Half, Upstill also runs a full-service PR Agency – Troppo PR and Communications, servicing all of North Australia.

“There is so much potential and a huge audience who want to be seen and heard by mainstream media,” she said. “The usual press releases won’t cut it here, so this specialty agency works with clients to find an angle that does.”

She launched The Top Half and Troppo PR and Communications after a successful career in the media. Her work includes time at the NT News and behind the mic as part of the podcast Mums Gone Troppo, which made the parenting category finals of the Australian Podcast Awards after just one year on air. She also sits on the board of the Darwin Turf Club.
