The Weekend Australian wins news brand of the year at News Media Awards, as NT News wins regional prize

It was a successful night for both News Corp and New Zealand at the inaugural News Media Awards, run by industry body News Media Works.

News Corp won 13 of the 36 trophies – including regional news brand of the year for the NT News and overall news brand of the year for national masthead The Weekend Australian – while New Zealand publisher NZME took home eight awards and Stuff.co.nz had two.

Fairfax Media’s Australian titles won nine awards, including news story of the year for Nick McKenzie and Richard Baker’s China’s Operation Australia.

The News Media Awards are the result of News Media Works consolidating its PANPA Newspaper of the Year Awards and Advertising and Marketing Awards – which previously ran on consecutive nights – into one program.

At the time of announcing the change, News Media Works CEO Peter Miller said the awards program must evolve to remain relevant to publishers and products.

“Successful news media organisations have always been a collaboration between both content and commercial teams – one cannot survive without the other,” Miller said in March.

Of the first exeuction of the newly formed awards, Miller said the winning entries demonstrated that the region’s publishing standard is world class.

“Our newly rebranded News Media Awards are now in their 49th year and recognised as the region’s pre-eminent awards in the news media industry. The new-look awards reflect the changing nature of news brands to meet the needs of advertisers and readers, where trust to provide quality, credible journalism is critical to their success,” he said.
