The worst people in the world are making the most desperate hand over their data. What could possibly go wrong?

Welcome to a Tuesday update from Unmade. Today’s full post post is for Unmade’s paying members.
Today: The ACCC has highlighted the data liberties being taken in the real estate sector – what’s the government going to do about it? And the Unmade Index lifts from its all-time low.
The Venn diagram of people who are organised enough to sign up as a paying member of Unmade; interested enough in how AI is affecting the media and marketing industry to come along to today’s HumAIn conference; and disorganised enough not to have yet bought a ticket may be quite small. But, if that’s you, for one final time in 2024, your coupon code is under the paywall. See you in four hours.

Wow…just, WOW.
With real estate being front of mind for politicians and community members alike (me being one) at the moment – how is this area so poorly regulated. I thought the default “opt-in” choice for unsolicited marketing was the legal requirement, and that the blackmail of no-choice-if-you-want-the-service sharing of personal information was firmly illegal.
Honestly thought this was covered under our Pivacy Act – thanks so much for the article, Tim. Very informative…and horrifying!
Interesting stuff. Having recently been job hunting, I’d add Recruitment to the list of areas where random people can ask for any sort of data as part of the process. Whilst I don’t think they’re (yet) selling off all the personal information I’ve been forced to provide just to apply for a role, I have no idea how well protected from hackers it is.
