This NRL season the most-watched in Foxtel history
Following their claims of record AFL viewership, Foxtel Group has announced that the 2024 NRL season was the watched of all time across its platforms, with seven consecutive years of viewership growth.
Kayo Sports viewership surged 30% year on year, with five billion minutes streamed across all Foxtel’s streaming platforms (Foxtel Now, Foxtel Go and Kayo Sports), also up 30% compared to 2023.
More than half of all Foxtel subscribers (59%) streamed NRL during the season.
“2024 was record breaking season in many ways,” said Fox Sports MD Steve Crawley.
“From Las Vegas to Magic Round right to the final whistle of the regular season with the Knights v Dolphins game determining the last spot in the top eight, we have enjoyed bringing the very best of the sport to audiences nationwide.
“Congratulations to the NRL and teams on a successful year.”
Comparatively, Kayo Sports saw 6.1 billion minutes of AFL streamed this season, up 39% year-on-year, with Kayo streamers comprising over half of Foxtel Group’s total AFL audience.

Gees I love big numbers that don’t really mean much if you are in advertising.
So how big is Foxtel’s NRL 5 billion minutes in the season? Maybe the average game is a more meaningful indicator?
Using some rough numbers, NRL shows 204 games in the footy season and each game’s coverage typically runs for 2 hours. So (leaving out other games that might also be counted in the 5 billion minutes such as SOO) that adds up to 24,480 minutes broadcast.
The average game’s audience duration of watching the game is 204,248 minutes Australia-wide across all devices and locations. In a population of just over 27 million, the average person watches just under 1 second (OK .. about three-quarters of a second).
Yeah, I know the above is also pretty meaningless (but maybe making media buyers thinking deeper).
