TikTok given chance to appeal US ban
The US Supreme Court has agreed to consider an appeal by TikTok and its parent company ahead of a proposed ban of the app.
Per CNN, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear TikTok and Chinese internet tech company ByteDance’s argument that the ban is a violation of the First Amendment, with the platform arguing that it poses no threat to US security.
The US House of Representatives first passed a bill in March pushing for TikTok to be banned in the United States due to concerns that the globally popular app poses national security risks. The bill called for ByteDance to sell its stake or face a total ban.
However on Wednesday, the Supreme Court agreed to expedite the case and will hear the arguments on January 10.
The news has posed questions about the use of TikTok in Australia, however, general manager, global business solutions, for TikTok Australia, Brett Armstrong, argued that there are no local threats.
“TikTok is a platform that is loved by over 8.5 million Australians and 350,000 Australian businesses, with a recent independent study by Oxford Economics finding that we contribute $1.1b and 13,000 jobs to the Australian economy,” Armstrong said earlier this year.
“There is zero evidence suggesting that TikTok is in any way a national security risk, and we welcome the Prime Minister’s recent comments that his Government has no plans to ban us.”
