Tim Cox departs ABC Tasmania for Gold Coast breakfast

Tim Cox abcABC Hobart’s veteran presenter Tim Cox is to leave the station after 20 years to take over the breakfast shift on ABC Gold Coast.

Cox currently presents Statewide Mornings on both 936 ABC Hobart and ABC Northern Tasmania.

In 2009 he was named ABC Local Radio’s broadcaster of the year.

He last show will be on December 17.

He told listeners: “In July this year I reached a 20-year milestone with ABC Radio in Tasmania. I have been fortunate enough to ply my trade right across the day and, on occasion, across the country and for more than a decade Statewide Mornings has been my wonderful, all-consuming and enriching office.

“But in 2011, after 11 years together, Mornings will have a new host. After such a long time it quite likely needs a change and, really, so do I: renewal is vital in any relationship – even yours and mine – and next year I’ll be taking up a new, on-air challenge with the ABC in Queensland.”

he added: “I am very excited about seeing if you can, perhaps, teach an old dog new tricks: for the first time I’ll be a Breakfast presenter and trying something new, even for me, in radio.”

Lou Garnier, the ABC’s acting local radio manager, said: “Tim has a unique place in the spectrum of Tasmanian broadcasters. His commitment to ABC Local Radio, his listeners and his willingness to share his expertise with his colleagues has made him a valuable member of the ABC family in Tasmania.”

A spokeman for ABC Tasmania told Mumbrella that a new programming lineup would be announced in January.
