Today show and Sunrise battle it out, but no-one cares

Nine and Seven may have managed to avoid a costly, and pointless, legal battle over who really has the most popular breakfast show this morning, but that hasn’t stopped its personalities from going head to head in the court of public opinion.

Nine’s Today show co-host Lisa Wilkinson celebrated the Seven Network’s dropping its court case on Twitter, claiming the decision signals Seven “now concedes Today Show has won the official OzTAM breakfast show ratings for 2016”.

Wilkinson followed up the Tweet quickly with a clarifier:

Interestingly, the Sunrise team was also quick to herald the no-score draw as a win, with executive producer Michael Pell claiming tweeting that Nine had admitted Sunrise was Australia’s number one breakfast show and “truth wins”.

Meanwhile, host Samantha Armytage thanked Nine for “saving us court costs”:

Seven’s press release this morning was also less than subtle, claiming Sunrise is “Australia’s undisputed number one”, focusing on the average combined metro and regional audience metric in which Sunrise remains ahead.

Inevitably Twitter reacted. The sentiment: “who cares?”sunrise-today-who-casres-2sunrise-today-who-cares-3

It’ll be reassuring for both sides to know that the tens of thousands of dollars spent on legal fees wasn’t wasted…
