Toyota has recruited cricketing legend Glenn McGrath to promote its “Toyota Time” deals with a focus on its “Aussie built” cars.

The 30-second commercial features a Toyota concierge called Zoe, Adam the salesman and McGrath, devised by agency Oddfellows.

The ad is part of a wider campaign promoting the company’s sales which also feature Zoe and Adam. The campaign runs through January and February, supported across press and digital however McGrath only appears in the TV commercials.

Rotor Studio’s Antonia Orenia-Barlin, who directed the ad, told Mumbrella: “A lot of its the continuation of the Zoe character which has been seeded for the last 12 months or so but incorporating Glenn McGrath into those. It’s really just about incorporating a fun dynamic between the two of them and the Adam character, who’s the salesman.

“It’s really getting a little bit more of Glenn McGrath’s personality in there to have him be a bit more prominent rather than just a spruiker. He’s such a warm and engaging guy and he’s got great recognition and the fact that we just won the Ashes certainly helps.

“He’s such a gentleman. Glenn’s fantastic, he’s pretty hard on himself. In between takes if he didn’t do it perfectly in his mind, he’d berate himself and you can really see that competitive spirit come out. He’s a bit of a one-take wonder, but he’ll always keep trying for it to be as good as it can be. He’s a real dream to work with.”

The “Aussie built” focus follows Holden’s decision late last year to move manufacturing offshore, and follows a recent ad from the GM brand which has caused a backlash among the public.
