Triple M and 1116 SEN to simulcast tribute to Danny Frawley
On Saturday, Southern Cross Austereo’s Triple M and Pacific Star Network’s 1116 SEN will simulcast a special edition of The Saturday Rub in tribute to the recently deceased Danny ‘Spud’ Frawley.
Frawley, a former AFL star as well as media commentator and mental health advocate, passed away on Monday.
His death was felt across the Melbourne AFL community, with media and AFL identity Eddie McGuire and Foxtel’s CEO Patrick Delany both taking a moment out of last night’s Foxtel Media relaunch to pay tribute to their colleague and friend. The first seven pages of News Corp’s Melbourne paper the Herald Sun were dedicated to Frawley yesterday.
And now, Frawley’s “great radio mates” will reunite in a tribute to the “larger-than-life” media figure.
For 10 years, Frawley sat alongside Brian Taylor, James Brayshaw, Garry Lyon and Damian Barrett for the Triple M Saturday Rub team. In recent years, Brayshaw and Barrett have remained part of The Saturday Rub, while Lyon and Frawley made the move to SEN to be part of its football coverage.
From 12pm, this Saturday 14 September, Taylor, Brayshaw, Barrett and Lyon will come together on the airwaves again.
Head of Triple M Mike Fitzpatrick said all rivalries are being put aside for Frawley.
“This idea, dreamt up by Garry, James, Damo and Rub producer Luke Tunnecliffe, to honour their dear friend, is a fitting tribute to a beautiful man who was larger than life,” he said. “All rivalries are put aside so we can celebrate a great man. There won’t be a dry eye.”
Pacific Star Network’s managing director, Craig Hutchison, said Frawley would have loved the idea.
“No-one told a yarn better than Danny, so the idea of getting his mates together to reflect and share some of Spud’s great moments and stories will be really moving and promises plenty of laughs,” he said.
“Spud was everyone’s mate, and news of his passing has had a huge impact on us all. We look forward to honouring him in this way.”
The simulcast will be heard in Melbourne on 105.1 Triple M and 1116 SEN. In Adelaide it will be on 104.7 Triple M and 1629 SEN SA. It will also feature on Triple M in Hobart, Bendigo, Shepparton, Mildura, Mt Gambier, Griffith, and 3BA Ballarat.
My deepest condolences on Spud. Tell the boys to appreciate the time we had to spend we him in our lives. Maybe these times are for us to reflect on what we have until we lose it. Some people are just simply larger than life and their lives shine so brightly around us that we don’t appreciate it until it burns out.
Please tell the boys Chief , Lyons, Moons,Bernie and especially Spuds family that to stay strong and that everyone involved are in our prayers and thoughts.
May he rest in peace and finally become our producer and coach from above.
