TV audience finds Beat The Star’s bread-turning-to-toast a turn-off

beat_the_star_toasterSeven’s new Tuesday scheduling weak link appears to be Beat The Star, a game show in which families compete in challenges against TV personalities.

Last night’s first outing of show – which climaxed with the family trying to guess more accurately than occasional My Kitchen Rules guest chef Manu Feildel when toast was done – rated an average audience of 955,000 according to preliminary TV ratings from OzTam.

Hosted by Daniel MacPherson, the show was announced beforehand by Seven as “big event TV… arena style spectacular”.

Beat The Star came fourth in the 7.30pm timeslot, behind Nine’s Top Gear (1.295m), Ten’s Talkin Bout Your Generation (1.210m) and ABC1’s The 7.30 Report (1.021m).

Beat The Star marks Seven’s second stalled attempt to launch a new format to sit with Packed To The Rafters on a Tuesday night. Its clip show Australia Versus, fronted by Tim Ross, was a ratings disaster and was quickly taken off air.

The show was well behind Seven’s ratings in the same timeslot last week when The X Factor auditions show rated 1.482m.

The lower inherited ratings from Beat The Star also appeared to hurt Packed To The Rafters. Although the show was top for the night with 1.739m, it was more than 100,000 down on last week.

Much like Nine’s much-panned debut of Cops LAC last week, Twitter was harsh about Beat The Star, describing it as “bogan Gladiators” and one askign Seven: “Why do you hate your viewers?”:

@MolksTVTalk: ANYTHING would be better than #BeatTheStar. If this is what they produce with the cash left after #xfactorau… God help us all.

@Zoe_was_here: I’m not watching #BeatTheStar next week. It was far to lame to watch another episode of it.

@muzgaz: I didn’t watch #beatthestar but I detect from the tweets it was a truckload of shite. Even with Manu.

@JodieNicholson: @SevenNetworkau….. why do you hate your viewers? Why are we punished with utter crap like #beatthestar?

@liz_baillie: Why the hell are hotManu & #DanMcPherson on such a travesty as #beatthestar? I admit I love crap TV but this makes my eyes bleed

@Helly_Hino: what the fuck is #beatthestar ? TERRIBLE!

@MrsBker: It’s like Bogan Gladiators #beatthestar
