TV ratings: Big Bash League final beats Australian Open quarter-finals

The finale of the Big Bash League on Seven outrated the Australian Open on Nine last night, the first time the BBL has managed to topple the tennis this year.

The final, between the Brisbane Heat and the Sydney Sixers scored 471,000 viewers across the five metro areas, pipping the Australian Open’s 471,000.

Interestingly, in Melbourne the tennis trumped the cricket (219,000 vs 104,000), while in competing cities Brisbane and Sydney, cricket viewers far outweighed tennis fans.

Once again, the AO scheduling damaged Nine’s ratings somewhat, with the men’s battle between world #2 Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev starting well after 10pm.

Daniil Medvedev’s quarter-final matchup was also done and dusted by 6pm, with commuters missing all the action.
